Heart Fire Sanctuary Workshop:
Making Your Own Teacups and Yunomi

The Tea Cup is the most personal and intimate part of a tea practice. Your choice of tea ware can reflect seasonal changes, your selection of tea, or special designs for special guests (they’re all special). This is why tea enthusiasts have so many different tea cups and tea pots. It's all a play of expression. Each has a story worth telling.

Come make your own tea cups with your own unique expression and story. We’ll be using a pinching/ carving technique to form the cups. Then using a variety of techniques to decorate the surfaces. The possibilities are endless.  I will be highlighting an ancient decoration technique called Sgraffito. It’s very simple, yet powerful. You’ll have plenty of time to make several cups and practice your designs before applying them. Some colored glazes, slips and underglazes will be available.




Some experience with clay is helpful, but not necessary.

All Clay and tools are provided though you may bring your own if you have them.

2.  Fire your tea cups (Up to 3) and be part of the Yukti wood firing crew: 100$ 

(Does not include the price of the workshop)

You’ll be part of the crew so there’ll be one day of preparation work before the firing, shifts during the firing, and participation in the unloading of the kiln after the firing.

Having your tea cups fired in the Yukti kiln and participating in the firing is, indeed, filled with alchemical magic with deep transformational rewards. Your tea cups become not only beautiful but part of  your unforgettable experience and story. There is never any guarantee that anything in the wood kiln will survive. The process is filled with great risk and  great reward. But always filled with magic. The kiln is fired for 4 days, 24 hrs a day. Then it needs to cool for a week before it can be opened to reveal the results. If you choose to participate in the firing, you will receive a packet of information that will give you more details. There are different levels of participation. Some physical challenges are present.
