Throwing soft slabs is one of my favorite techniques of making with clay. It’s so spontaneous and fun with lots of surprises. The technique is quite simple but it can produce complex designs. Stretching slabs lets you work magic with textures and create impossibly thin rims and walls that remain quite strong.

We’ll start with smaller items such as cups, tiles, and mugs. Then, with a bit more planning, you can grow into vases, jars, planters and more. If you like more precision you could concentrate on making a teapot.

In this 2 day workshop, I’ll show you how to assemble slabs like coils to build larger vessels or plates and wall hangings with layered patterns and texture.

To “spice” things up even more will be working in multi-colored earth tone clays and colored slips.

It really is an infinite exploration of your imagination and clay.

All Clay and tools are provided.

Bring a lunch and I’ll serve tea.

Some experience is helpful but enthusiasm and patience are more important.

I’m offering an option during this workshop to make something for the Yukti wood kiln. There may be an extra charge or work trade depending on the size.

All Heart Fire Sanctuary workshops are offered freely, though a minimum fee of $1.00 is required to complete registration below. Please email heartfiresanctuary@gmail.com with any questions.
